She fought the charges and after a nine year battle, won the right for every tarot reader to do so legally)
Doreen Valiente (1922-1999) – one of the most respected English witches to have influenced the modern day movement of Witchcraft; an early initiate and High Priestess of Gerald Gardner, she co-wrote with him the basic rituals and other materials that helped to changed and shaped contemporary Witchcraft as it is perceived today.  As Gerald Gardner is now commonly thought of as the “Father” of contemporary Witchcraft, so Doreen is known affectionately as the “Mother”.
Stewart Farrar (1916-2000) – his first non-fiction book, What Witches Do, proved to be a milestone for the Craft. Stewart with his wife Janet, moved to Ferns, County Wexford, Ireland, in the spring of 1976 and produced the first of their own independent writings. Here, immersing themselves in rural Irish tradition and culture, they formed a coven nucleus and worked out ritual drama for their Eight Sabbats for Witches published in 1981.  He wrote 7 witchcraft novels (Omega was perhaps the most outstanding and idealistic. It depicts a world ravaged by man’s corruption, his rape of the planet and the final coming to terms with a New World through the philosophy of Wicca.)
Gerald Gardner (1884-1964) – (from Wicca Explained author bio) perhaps one of the best known and talked about figures in modern witchcraft to date.  An English hereditary Witch, he was the founder of contemporary Witchcraft practiced as a religion; authored the now famous books Witchcraft Today Blog Buttons & Links and The Meaning of Witchcraft Blog Buttons & Links
Merlin Stone  (1931-2011) was an author, sculptor, and professor of art and art history. She is best-known for her book When God Was a Woman, it Blog Buttons & Linkshad a profound effect on the emerging Goddess Culture of the 1970s and 80s in the US (Quote: “The Goddess is not just the female version of God. She represents a different concept”).
